Retrofit insulation in Bakersfield CA - an older house that stays comfortable
Hot upstairs rooms and a climbing power bill in an older house usually mean a thin attic. We seal the gaps, then add what's missing.

What does retrofit insulation involve in an older Bakersfield home?
Retrofit insulation in Bakersfield, CA is adding insulation to a house that's already built. Usually that means blowing new insulation onto the attic floor of an older home that has little or none up there, after the gaps in that floor are sealed, so the rooms below hold their temperature better.
Most older houses I go into have a few tired inches up there, or close to nothing, and the owner feels it in a hot upstairs and a power bill that won't quit. The price moves with the size of the attic, how much is already there, and whether anything has to come out first. Old material that got soaked or full of droppings is a job for insulation removal before anything new goes down. The schedule turns on that prep, on whether the walls need filling too and on whether your address needs a permit, which we check for you. At the estimate I show you what I found and what I'd do, so you know where your number comes from.

I check the attic myself
I go up in the attic or under the house with a flashlight and show you what's there, from soaked old insulation to gaps around lights and pipes. You get what I'd do, in what order, and my price for it before anyone commits to anything.
Permit, prep and repairs first
If you go ahead, we check whether your address falls under the city or the county, and if the job needs a permit, we handle the paperwork and the inspection. Anything that needs fixing or pulling out gets done before new insulation goes in.
Install and a final check
Our installers do the sealing and the install, and I look it over myself before we call the job done. Satisfaction guaranteed.
How we do retrofit insulation in an older house
On an older house, I look for knob and tube wiring and vermiculite before I quote, because either one changes what we can safely do up there. I also check for roof leaks and anything that burns gas, since tightening an attic over a leak or a flue that isn't venting right just hides the problem. Fresh insulation over a leak only gives the water somewhere soft to land. Once that's settled, bad old material comes out and our crew seals the gaps around can lights, pipes and the attic hatch. Then we blow in loose fill through a hose, evenly out to the edges and with the eave vents kept open so the attic still breathes. If the walls need filling too, we drill small holes, fill each space between the studs and patch the holes when we're done.
Foam is the other way to go. Spray foam insulation costs more and seals air while it insulates, and I'd pick it when the ductwork runs through the attic, because then the attic itself is worth keeping tight. Everywhere else, sealing the gaps and topping up loose fill usually gets you there for less. If the attic is all your house needs, that's our regular attic insulation job without the wall work.

Retrofit insulation questions from Bakersfield homeowners
How much does it cost to add attic insulation to an older house in Bakersfield?
Attic insulation in Bakersfield usually costs about $1,600 to $5,300 per job. That's the going rate around here for attic work, not our price, and filling the walls is separate work on top of it. Your own figure comes from the estimate, once I've seen what's up there.
What is the best way to add insulation to an older attic?
Seal first, then insulate. Federal building guides say the holes and gaps in an existing attic floor should be closed with sealant, spray foam or blocking, and that the new layer should cover the whole ceiling, with baffles at the eaves that keep air moving and keep insulation from spilling in. If you're collecting quotes, ask for air sealing in the same one, since adding insulation is the time to do it.
Can my walls be insulated without tearing them open?
Usually, yes. Existing exterior walls can be filled through small holes near the top of each stud space, from inside or outside, and a federal building guide calls this drill and fill method common and fairly uninvasive. If your house was built before 1980, the same guide says to be aware of lead safety rules, since drilling disturbs the wall.
How do I handle vermiculite insulation in my attic before adding more?
Leave it alone and tell us about it before we quote. The EPA says to assume vermiculite may contain asbestos and recommends leaving it undisturbed, and a retrofit would otherwise stir it up. If I find it on the visit, we plan the job around it before anything gets touched.
Can you blow insulation over knob and tube wiring?
No. A federal building guide notes that the National Electrical Code allows no insulation on or around knob and tube wiring, the old cloth-wrapped wires strung on porcelain knobs. If it's still live up there, that gets settled with an electrician first, and the insulation waits.
Do I need a permit or a licensed contractor for insulation in Bakersfield?
It may need a permit, and that's settled by address before work starts. The City of Bakersfield Building Division issues permits and inspects home projects, but its list of examples doesn't mention insulation, so we check whether you're under the city or the county and handle the paperwork and inspection if one's needed. California treats insulation as its own contractor trade, and someone without a license can only take a job under $1,000 that needs no permit and that they do with no employees. We're licensed and fully insured.
